hey instead of pushing my suicidal tendencies with stupid shitty asks let me tell you about a game that i really like instead

Boktai is a Konami title produced by Hideo Kojima, known for his Metal Gear series! The game is an isometric action rpg and it plays similarly to the top down Legend of Zelda games with a tinge of Metal Gear Solid to it. There’s lots of sneaking, puzzles, blocks to be pushed, collectible items and vampires to slay!

you play as Django, wielding the Vampire Killer Gun Del Sol, a weapon passed down to him by his late father Ringo. The journey begins in Fog Castle where you’re set off along side your companion Otenko to defeat The Count of Groundsoaking Blood

god, look at this guy. how cool.

anyway, he is apparently recovering from his injuries after your father’s battle with him and you’ve set out to put him down and avenge your father once and for all.

what’s really unique about Boktai is the game cartridge itself has a built-in solar sensor which affects the actual gameplay itself. It’s really wacky and pretty out there but it’s also really cool and utilized in some pretty clever and fun ways. especially when it comes to puzzles and such.

image

for example: if my cartridge wasn’t exposed to any sunlight this light wouldn’t be pouring through the glass above and I wouldn’t be able to recharge my Gun Del Sol’s batteries beneath it.

there’s plenty of different encounters throughout that change- for better or for worse for you depending on how much sunlight your sensor’s taking in.

an example is this room where the foes are only visible during low-to-no sunlight, but then completely disappear when you’re exposing the sensor to too much!

this whole mechanic even comes into a boss fight later on where the foe hides themselves under cover and you have to lure them out by temporarily covering the solar sensor getting them to think the sun is gone and it’s safe before continuing your fight with them.

it’s important to note that the MGSque elements of the game are primarily a focus in the first game as the later titles become more RPG centric, with stats, different weapons and a bigger focus on combat, even unique abilities and such that go along with it.

but hey, even Solid Snake shows up in the second game to offer tools and supplies to Django to aid him in vampire huntin’

but basically, yeah! Boktai fucking rules- if you’ve ever wanted a Metal Gear Solid Zelda-Esque Vampire-Killing game with a weird western motif, Boktai’s a game that I highly recommend to you!

there’s a patched version of the game that allows you to adjust the level of lighting with button inputs, that way the game is playable without sunlight if you wanted!

before I wrap this up I should mention Kura5, it is a currently-in-development 3D-Boktai fangame that utilizes the local weather data instead of the sunlight.

it’s been looking really promising and I’m very excited for it! please consider checking it out yourself on their blog @ http://kura5.tumblr.com/

Keep the sun always in your heart!
