literally how hard would it have been for jkr to say something like “listen I was writing it in the 90s, I was inexperienced, I was writing from my own point of view, I didn’t realise how underrepresented a lot of people are, I wasn’t thinking about anything other than the plot, I accept that it’s a little sparse on the diversity front, I can try to be more self aware with my future works” etc etc instead of.. this nonsense
KA Applegate just did this re: GLBT rep in Animorphs and kind of left it at that. Like it doesn’t have to be some groveling apology just “sorry, I didn’t consider it as much as I should’ve. I’m trying to do better with my future work.”
Oeverr even like…not saying anything?? Nobody was really criticizing her hella hard before this. People got that it wasn’t as good as it could’ve been with rep but recognized there was some good. And people even liked her saying people were free to envision the trio however they wanted. And while Cursed Child wasn’t really received well, people at least liked that she supported casting Noma Dumezweni.
If she’d just left it at that, I think people would’ve let it go and would’ve only rolled their eyes slightly at the “Dumbledore was secretly gay all along” thing.
